Which Educational Tree Will You Choose?

What is true education? Is it reading enough to pass a test? Is it the quest of gaining a bunch of facts in order to impress others? Are we to just focus on the mental aspect of our person or are we to develop the physical and spiritual aspect of being as well? Could it be that the traditional understanding of mainstream education is too narrow? For many years I pondered over questions like these.

From a biblical standpoint, two texts come to mind. " [In God] are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" Colossians 2:3.

"He [God] has counsel and understanding" (Job 12:13). If we were to excel in all fields of knowledge in all educational disciplines we still would not be able to claim that we know it all.

One must realize that there is One who transcends all knowledge in which by engaging in communion with Him will impart all of the wisdom one needs.

From antiquity until now, there have only been two trees of education. One tenet is that man is supreme and in control, lacking nothing and should do as he wills.The other tenet is understanding and accepting the fact that finite beings are broken and need to be restored back to perfection in body, mind, and soul. Therefore, true education should lift man up closer to the Creator, not down.

True education focuses on the building up of character. When parents understand this, and vow to focus on teaching by example such character traits of unselfishness, kindness, and compassion, they will see that such virtues as these underlie all true development and not only makes the child a pleasure in the home, but in society as well.

True education seeks to develop leaders and train one to be a thinker and not one who regurgitates the thoughts of another. True education teaches one to be a successful, law-abiding citizen and not a victim of circumstance.

Let's not sell ourselves and children short. Let's seek to give them a higher education one that cannot be confined to the classroom. This type of education, true education will not only be a blessing in this life; but in the life to come.
